1960s Space Plane Subject of Aug. 26 Lecture and Book Signing Author Michelle Evans discusses her book about the remarkable X-15 On Aug. 26, the Museum hosts a lecture and book signing with author Michelle Evans, who will talk about her book, "The X-15 Rocket Plane: Flying the First Wings into Space." Evans captures the drama and excitement of the program behind the plane that was flown into space 15 years before the shuttle. Her book puts a human face on the feats of science and engineering that went into the X-15 program, and introduces its largely unsung pilots. By the time of the Apollo 11 moon landing, only 31 American astronauts had flown into space, and eight of them were astronaut-pilots of the X-15. The 2 p.m. program is free with admission to the Museum.
